Shadowline System

Create a modern look using Intrim’s exclusive SK800 series Shadowline system. The system eliminates the inconvenience of using a P50 angle or PVC 10mm Shadowline bead, saving you up to 30% of your installation time, saving you money. This modern look skirting provides a neat finish to the base of plasterboard walls. Skirting ‘steps back’ from plasterboard surface creating a distinct shadowline finish.

Why choose Intrim Shadowline system?

The Intrim Shadowline Series offers a distinctive and patented skirting and door jamb system, created by Intrim’s founder, a former carpenter aiming to address common construction challenges. This unique system is moulded into the timber, providing a precise architectural line that results in a seamless and refined appearance.

Designed with a 10mm recess between the skirting board and the wall, the Shadowline System contributes to a polished aesthetic. Its versatility accommodates various design styles, and it eliminates the need for a P50 angle during installation, saving you both time and money.

Available as primed MDF, the Shadowline System can be used in new constructions as well as renovations for both residential and commercial applications. The system’s efficiency in achieving a sophisticated finish makes it a preferred choice for builders and trades seeking a reliable, quick to install and aesthetically pleasing solution.

What is the difference between SK800 Shadowline system, P50 bead method and plastic bead method for creating Shadowline?

Intrim Shadowline is a skirting board and door jamb system, where the shadowline is moulded into the timber providing a precise architectural line, unlike the P50 bead and plastic bead method to create a shadowline.

Explore the difference between Intrim’s SK800 shadowline, and the other two methods of creating shadowline:

Intrim SK800 Shadowline® System: SK800 is Intrim’s patented one-piece Shadowline system. With SK800 you get a consistent shadow line, no variation in the grooves, and most importantly, ease of installation. It saves around 30% time on installation over other Shadowline products and installation methods, which means comparatively less installation cost. Because it is all timber it is easy to paint and gives a consistent finish. It also removes the issue of cracks appearing on the shadowline provided all the instructions were followed during the installation.

Shadowline Skirting using P50 bead: Using P50 bead is a traditional way of creating Shadowline. It can produce inconsistent and messy Shadowline grooves, and you can also see some cracking at the bottom of the Shadowline after installation. Because it is a two-piece system and requires blocking behind the skirting to support the joint, it takes longer to install, which results in high installation costs.

Shadowline Skirting using Plastic bead: This method removes the issue of cracks appearing at the bottom of the Shadowline. Cracks may occur on top of the Shadowline, but they are not visible to the eyes. This method still does not guarantee crisp and consistent grooves, takes longer to install, and incurs high installation costs.

How strong is SK800 Shadowline?

Intrim Shadowline is a skirting board and door jamb system, where the shadowline is moulded into the timber providing a precise architectural line, unlike the P50 metal angle and plastering method to create a shadowline.

We often get asked by builders and installers who have worked with the P50 system, “how strong is the join?” and “is it going to crack?”. This concern stems from what seems like an unusual partnership between timber and plaster at a join, and the worry that the two surfaces may not bond well, be as strong or that moisture may affect the join over time.

When selecting our timber suppliers, we choose only the best. Our careful selection ensures that our timber is of the highest quality and the moisture content in the finished timber is tested and correct. As well as this, we rigorously test all of our timber materials to ensure they meet the high standards and specifications required for achieving ultimate strength and durability.

As an added safeguard to your project, we only offer our Shadowline System pre-primed, which provides an additional moisture barrier around the timber to further reduce moisture intake over time and potential timber changes during acclimatisation.

During installation we recommend using Fiba Fuze tape which creates a strong, seamless join, without the risk of crack appearing. To avoid cracking you must also allow the jointing compound to dry fully between coats as per the manufacturer’s specifications and instructions. Drying times are approximately 24 hours in normal conditions or 48 hours in cool conditions between each coat. See USG Boral instructions here.

You can see in our demonstration video that even a sledgehammer cannot break the join.

Why would I buy Intrim SK800 shadowline?

With the Intrim Shadowline System, common issues experienced when using a P50 metal angle are eliminated, such as messy Shadowline grooves, misalignment and length of time to install. Intrim’s Shadowline saves 30% time on installation over other Shadowline products and install methods.

This ease of installation experienced with the Shadowline system and the neat finish saves time on rectifying defects that commonly occur, resulting in faster, high-quality projects with fewer costs.

Not only does the Shadowline save on time and money, but it also achieves a stunning, neat finish that creates phenomenal residential and commercial interiors.

Frequently asked questions

At what stage of my project is the Intrim 800 Series Shadowline door jamb and skirting installed?

They are both installed prior to the plasterboard installation. Door jambs are assembled by forming mitre joints where the head joins the stiles as opposed to the traditional half joint. The door jamb is then installed and packed plumb and level. It is critical that the jamb material is centrally located over the framing material and runs parallel with the framing material so that the PVC (PLTB 630) plaster stop bead fits neatly against the door jamb material. Skirting is installed to fit tightly between the door jambs. The plasterboard sheets are then installed tight against the back face of the 800 Series door jamb and on top of 800 Series skirting. The PVC (PLTB 630) stop bead is then installed to surround the door jambs. All joints between the bottom edge of plasterboard sheeting and top edge of shadowline skirting are to be plaster set and must also include reinforcing joint paper tape when setting. Also plaster set all PVC stop beads surrounding the door jambs.

What if my flooring needs to be installed after gyprock installed?

Intrim’s Two Piece Shadowline SK801-802 and SK803- 804 systems have been created to solve this problem! It allows for removal of the bottom piece of skirting so that flooring can be installed and then the Shadowline skirting piece replaced and fixed in place over the top of the flooring. This eliminates the need to place an unsightly timber floor bead where the bottom corner of the skirting meets with the top of flooring junction and maintains the minimalistic theme featured with 800 series.

Is Shadowline 800 Series skirting suitable for carpet and timber flooring applications?

Yes. The one piece SK800 profile is suitable for carpet finish and hard flooring which can be installed prior to plasterboard. The 2 piece profile is used in timber or tile flooring applications where installation occurs after the walls have been plastered.

Is the Intrim 800 Series Door Jamb available in different section sizes to suit different width wall framing and plasterboard thicknesses?

Yes. We are able to manufacture these to suit any application.

How easy is Shadowline to install?

If you have installed the P50 angle shadowline system in the past, Intrim’s Shadowline system will save time and allow you to create a consistent and accurate shadowline detail. SK800 series skirting is supplied in 5.4m lengths rather than the shorter lengths of P50 that are available as this minimises joins and eases the installation process for longer wall sections. We have a full installation guide page with videos, step-by-step instructions and downloadable brochures.

How much is Shadowline Skirting?

Shadowline Skirting is the same price as other skirting boards profiles of the same size, material and thickness from the Intrim range. If you are after a price for budgeting purposes, you can either request a quote for your specific project, or determine the size of your Shadowline skirting and look up the size in our price list to provide a guide for your project.

How do I work out the size of Shadowline skirting to use?

The sizes of the Shadowline skirting are now shown as the visible height, NOT the total skirting board height. This allows you to simply measure from the floor up to the top of where you want the Shadowline groove to be positioned. That will be the visible height (as the top of the skirting is hidden behind the plasterboard). This diagram and Shadowline table of dimensions provides you with all the dimension options to help you select the size that best suits your requirements.

Can I use Intrim Shadowline for a project requiring fire rating compliance?

Intrim’s Shadowline SK800 Fire Rated MDF Skirting board has been extensively tested to meet the fire resistant AS1530.4-2014 standards it will achieve a FRL: -/60/60.

Is Intrim SK800 Shadowline System suitable for curved walls?

What is a Shadowline ceiling?

A Shadowline ceiling is a treatment where a traditional cornice mould is not used. Instead, a shadowline using a metal angle is created in the ceiling where it connects to the wall. This differs to square-set where a 90 degree angle between the walls is used without a shadowline. It is common when selecting a Shadowline ceiling to complement the contemporary modern style with Shadowline skirting and doorjambs to provide a consistent style. The Intrim Shadowline system is not available for ceilings.

What is a Shadowline cornice?

A shadowline cornice is a term used to describe a shadowline ceiling where the flush shadowline is created using metal angle around the edge of the ceiling where it meets the wall. A shadowline cornice matches perfectly with Intrim Shadowline SK800 system. The Intrim Shadowline system is not available for ceilings.

Will the Shadowline crack on Intrim Shadowline Skirting?

No, it won't so long as you follow the correct installation instructions.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

Yes, Fast Trim is not designed for small orders and as such the minimum order quantity is 400m which can be made up of a combination of skirting and architrave. If you are not sure if your project will be that size, talk to us and we can make a recommendation as to whether Fast Trim is suitable.
