Chair Rail Moulding Profiles

A chair rail is a horizontal timber moulding fixed to the wall at chair-back height, traditionally at around one-third of the wall height from the floor. Whether used as a decorative chair rail element or for practical chair rail wall protection in high-traffic areas, it divides the wall into two visual zones, adding a purposeful horizontal detail without the need for full wall panelling below. In Australia, the terms chair rail and dado rail are used interchangeably; both describe the same horizontal wall moulding.

Start with the room and the scale of the wall. In taller or more formal spaces, a heavier profile with more projection gives the wall presence. In compact rooms or hallways, a finer profile keeps the detail light. If you are painting the rail the same colour as the surrounding wall, choose a profile with defined shadow detail, which reads better than a flat-faced option in a tone-on-tone treatment.
