What is a faux ceiling beam or a non-structural ceiling beam wrap?

What is a non structural decorative Beam Wrap?

A non structural decorative beam wrap is a 3-piece U-shaped box that wraps around an existing beam or can be attached to a ceiling batten to provide the look of a ceiling beam or rafter.

How many decorative beam wraps do I need for my ceiling?

This is completely up to your design preference.  If you are only covering an existing ugly structural beam, then it is one per beam you are covering. If you are creating a faux ceiling beam, you need to first determine the spacing between the beams, and beam size. Here are a few tips.

  • Thicker beams will look better with more space between them.
  • Consider the size of your room, a larger room with a lot of closely spaced beams will look very busy
  • Consider the direction you will run the beams
  • Consider if you will need a beam flush against both side walls
  • Draw a plan on paper or mark it up on your ceiling with painter’s tape.

Measure the width of the ceiling and divide it by the spacing you select between the beams, don’t forget to take into consideration the thickness of the beams when doing this calculation.

What is the difference between a wood beam and a faux wood beam?

Ceiling beams are typically solid timber or steel and provide the supporting structure to hold up the roof or flooring of the level above. A faux wood beam or Intrim non-structural beam wrap provides the look of a structural beam however is a 3 sided box ceiling beam that is hollow inside. It is purely aesthetic and has no structural support. The cost differences are substantial as solid structural timber is expensive, while the beam wrap is 3 smaller pieces that create the look. This means they are

  • Lower cost
  • Lighter weight therefore easier to install
  • You can also run wiring for various electrical devices such as sound systems and lighting inside the hollow box.

How far apart should my decorative ceiling beams be?

This will be dependent on your design choice and the size and scale of the room. Most common ranges from 600mm to 2400mm, with 1200mm a popular spacing for many homes

What type of timber & finish is available?

We typically use Vic Ash with a clear lacquer to achieve this look. If you have other requirements talk to our team to assist you.
