Why choose the Intrim Shadowline Skirting System

A Shadowline detail – also referred to as a recessed skirting, shadow gap skirting or shadow line skirting – is a thin recessed line where two surfaces meet, most often the wall and the floor. It removes the visual weight of a traditional skirting board, creating a neat, seamless, flush finish around walls and doors.

Ideal for residential homes, apartments, and commercial buildings alike, the Intrim Shadowline® range offers a patented skirting system with the shadow gap moulded directly into the timber rather than created on site using a P50 metal angle or L-bead.

Designed by Intrim’s founder, a former carpenter, the system fixes the parts of P50 installation that frustrate builders and disappoint designers in equal measure. There are three reasons it has become the preferred specification across Australian builds.

The shadow line is moulded into the timber

With a P50 metal angle, the shadow gap is created on site, where small variations in wall flatness, plaster setting and bead alignment translate directly into inconsistent grooves. Intrim Shadowline skirting removes that variability. The line is part of the timber profile itself, machined to specification, so the detail reads the same down a 5.4 metre length as it does at the corners.

Around 30% faster to install

Because the system arrives as a finished profile rather than a multi-step plaster-and-bead assembly, Intrim Shadowline cuts roughly 30% off install time compared with P50 shadowline and L-bead methods. Lengths supplied at 5.4m also reduce the number of joins on long walls.

A complete system: skirting, door jamb, and architrave

A Shadowline detail is only as good as its weakest junction. The DJ800 Shadowline Door Jamb mirrors the SK800 skirting profile and suits 70mm and 90mm stud widths in 30mm and 40mm thicknesses. The pre-primed timber takes paint without the patchiness that can occur where MDF meets plaster, and the same shadow line architrave detail can be specified across architraves, openings, and curved feature walls.

Fire-rated Shadowline for BCA compliance

For projects where fire-rated skirting is required under the Building Code of Australia (BCA), such as apartments, aged care, hotels, hospitals, and any Class 2–9 build under the National Construction Code, Intrim manufactures the SK800FR Shadowline® FR MDF profile. The same recessed detail in fire-rated, medium-density fibreboard.

The system has been tested by CSIRO in accordance with AS 1530.4-2014 and achieves an FRL of -/60/60. Specifiers can maintain the Shadowline detail in fire-rated walls without compromising compliance, an option that is not available in many competing flush finish systems.

Fire-rated installation differs from standard Shadowline installation. Specifications, installation instructions, and the full CSIRO assessment summary are available on request.

How to choose your Shadowline profile

Three decisions determine which Shadowline profile suits a project: plasterboard thickness, flooring type, and visible skirting height. A fourth – groove depth – is a stylistic choice between the standard 10mm shadow gap and the more restrained 5mm gap offered in the SK805 series. Each profile delivers a true flush skirting board finish; the differences are practical, not visual.

One-piece or two-piece

The choice between one-piece and two-piece is determined by the flooring type and install sequence. Both deliver the same finished line. One-piece (SK800, SK800B, SK805) suits carpet and polished concrete. Two-piece (SK801-802, SK803-804) suits timber and tiled floors, where the lower piece is removed for flooring install, then refitted to maintain the recessed line.

A note on visible height

Shadowline sizes are listed by visible height, measured from the floor to the top of the groove. The board itself extends approximately 25mm above the visible height, sitting concealed behind the plasterboard. Heights are available from 90mm to 285mm to suit the room scale and ceiling height.

Intrim Shadowline vs P50 and L-bead

Most projects specify a Shadowline detail one of three ways: with a P50 metal angle, an L-bead, or the Intrim SK800 series. Each delivers the recessed line but with distinctions in consistency, install time, and how the finish performs over the life of the building.

The comparison below is the one most often asked for when builders evaluate P50 skirting against the patented Intrim Shadowline skirting alternative.

Method How it’s made Result Install time
Intrim SK800 Shadowline® One-piece patented timber profile, shadow gap moulded into the board Consistent line, easy to paint, resistant to cracking, available fire-rated Fastest. Around 30% less than P50
P50 metal angle Two-piece system: skirting plus a metal angle plastered into the wall to form the gap Variable groove width, prone to cracking at base, requires backing block to support join Slowest. Additional steps for blocking, bead and plaster setting
L- bead Skirting installed against a plastic bead set into the plasterboard More resistant to base cracking than P50, but cracks can form at the top of the bead. Groove consistency depends on install precision Slower than SK800; comparable to P50

For trade builders, the case for SK800 is install time and rectification cost. For designers and architects, it is the consistency of the finished line – the part of a Shadowline detail that is most often compromised when the gap is built rather than machined.

Shadowline installation

Shadowline skirting boards are installed before flooring and plasterboard. The skirting and door jamb are fixed first, the plasterboard is set against them, and the joint between the two is finished with a setting compound and reinforcing tape. Intrim recommends Fiba Fuze tape and the manufacturer’s recommended drying time between coats: approximately 24 hours in normal conditions and 48 hours in cool conditions.

The videos below cover the essentials of installing Intrim Shadowline profiles, including the two-piece method for timber and tiled floors and how to fit door jambs correctly. Watch here or read our Shadowline installation guide.

What our customers have to say

Frequently Asked Questions

At what stage of the build is Shadowline installed?

Both the Shadowline skirting and door jamb are installed before plasterboard. Door jambs are assembled with mitre joints, fixed plumb and centred over the framing. Skirting is fitted tightly between the jambs. Plasterboard is then set against the back face of the jamb and on top of the skirting, with a PVC stop bead surrounding the jambs and reinforcing tape at the skirting-to-plasterboard joint.

Will the Shadowline crack over time?

Not when installed correctly. Intrim recommends Fiba Fuze tape at the join, with full drying time between coats of jointing compound – approximately 24 hours in normal conditions and 48 hours in cool conditions. The pre-primed timber provides a moisture barrier that further reduces the risk of seasonal movement.

Can Shadowline be used on curved walls?

Yes. Intrim manufactures Shadowline to suit curved wall applications. Curved sections are made to specification. Speak to the team about the radius and the profile required.

Is there a Shadowline detail for ceilings?

Not within the Intrim Shadowline System. A Shadowline ceiling treatment uses a metal angle at the wall-ceiling junction in place of a traditional cornice. It is commonly specified alongside Shadowline skirting and door jambs to maintain a consistent contemporary detail throughout an interior, but it is constructed by the plasterer rather than supplied as an Intrim product.

How much does Shadowline cost?

Shadowline skirting is priced in line with comparable Intrim profiles of the same size, material, and thickness. For project pricing, request a quote with the relevant lengths and profile codes.

What is the maximum length of Shadowline skirting?

SK800 series profiles are supplied in 5.4 metre lengths. This is significantly longer than standard P50 skirting lengths and reduces the number of joins on long wall runs.

Is Shadowline available pre-primed?

Yes. The Shadowline System is supplied pre-primed only. The factory-applied primer creates a moisture barrier and provides a consistent base for paint.

Is Intrim Shadowline fire-rated?

Yes, the Intrim SK800 Shadowline® FR MDF skirting board meets the AS1530.4-2014 standard and is considered fire-rated, meeting the requirements for BCA fire compliance.
