6th August 2026 Three approaches are commonly used to achieve the shadowline effect: the P50 stopping angle, the L-bead, and the Intrim Shadowline® system. How each gets there, and how each holds up once the paint is dry, is what separates a premium shadowline detail from the rest of the market chasing the same look. What is the P50 shadowline stopping angle method? P50 is the term used for a galvanised metal stopping angle. It uses a bead fixed to the plasterboard, with a 10mm recess built in to form the recognisable shadow gap at the base of the wall. P50 shadowline is the most traditional method for a shadow gap skirting detail in Australian residential and commercial construction, and the one most plasterers already know how to use. The P50 sequence is straightforward on paper. The bead is fixed to the plasterboard and the joint is finished with at least two passes of setting compound, sanded between coats. A backing block (noggin) behind the plasterboard supports the skirting-to-bead junction, and the skirting board sits below, butting against the underside of the bead. The shadow gap itself reads in the space between the top of the skirting and the plasterboard face above it. That shadow detail is built on-site, which means its quality depends on the same three variables every time: wall flatness, bead alignment, and how carefully each plasterer sets and sands the compound. Small variations add up across a long wall run. Add the seasonal movement that comes with timber-framed construction, and the base of the bead becomes a common place for a crack to form once a building has been through its first year. What is the Intrim Shadowline system? The Intrim Shadowline® skirting series takes the opposite approach: the 10mm shadow groove is machined into the timber profile at the factory, not created on site. It arrives ready to install, groove and all. Rather than constructing the shadow gap around a metal bead, with Intrim’s flush system, you fix the skirting and door jamb to the framing first, then set the plasterboard against them. The joint between the two is finished with setting compound and reinforcing tape (Intrim recommends Fiba Fuze tape with full drying time between coats). No backing blocks and no additional plaster passes are needed to form the groove. The difference shows up the moment you look along a wall. A machined groove holds the same depth and width down every length of board, regardless of who plastered it or how flat the wall is. That precision is the distinction between a high-end shadow gap detail and one that only looks right in the renders. The Shadowline SK800 series offers a coordinated flush system, incorporating a patented skirting profile with a matching DJ800 door jamb. A fire-rated option – the SK800FR – is manufactured in FR MDF for Class 2-9 builds where the Building Code of Australia requires fire-compliant skirting. What about L-bead? L-bead is a plastic or metal strip designed to cap an unfinished edge. It is fixed to the plasterboard edge, with the skirting butting against its rebated profile to create the recess. It has slightly better crack resistance at the base than the P50 stopping angle because the plastic absorbs more movement at the skirting-wall junction. The trade-off is that cracking can appear at the top of the bead instead – where the plasterboard terminates – particularly as the building settles.
