Chair Rail

Chair rail mouldings, also known as dado rails or surbase, are fixed horizontally to the walls around the room to protect them from dents and marks caused by the back of chairs. Also used with inlay moulds to create wainscoting.

Dado Rail

Dado rails, also known as chair rails or surbase, are decorative profiles fixed horizontally to the walls around the room at chair back height to protect walls from dents. Also used with inlay moulds in wainscoting.

Inlay Mould

An inlay mould creates a faux frame look on walls and doors by fixing it to a flat surface for raised panel wainscoting. They can also be used as extra detailing on inset panels for recessed wainscoting or wherever a decorative design is required.

Picture Rail

Picture rail profiles are fixed horizontally to the walls around the room. You can use them to hang artwork and pictures. It also frames wall panelling or wallpaper to add depth and character to a room.

Sill Nosing

Sill nosing is used to dress the front of your wooden or concrete window sub sills to finish your interior look. Sill nosing is also excellent for disguising unsightly or old window sills and helps accentuate any window space.

Crown Mouldings

Crown moulding, also called cornice moulding, is designed to sit at an angle between the wall and ceiling but can also be integrated into the architrave over a doorway or window, as part of the mantel on a fireplace surround, or to finish the top of a column.

Door Jambs

Door jambs are the vertical and horizontal timbers attached to the frame onto which a door is hung and secured. Intrim offers jambs to save time on site, reducing the need to rip down standard-size jambs.

Corner Blocks

Corner blocks and rosettes are decorative wooden accessories used at the intersection of two lengths of moulding, forming a decorative border and adding an interesting design element.

Skirting Blocks

Skirting blocks, also known as plinth blocks, are decorative timber blocks installed at the bottom of an architrave where it meets the skirting board. Skirting blocks are usually thicker than the architrave, which enhances the look of the architrave and doorway.

Concave Mouldings

Concave is a timber moulding used to panel a wall or other surface. With a semi-circle removed from the batten it creates a decorative scallop.

Half Round Mouldings

Half-rounds have a little cut-out on the back with a half-circle shape. They're the opposite of concaves, placed side by side to create panelling for a wall or other surface.

Wall Mouldings

Wall mouldings and panelling are decorative trims used to accentuate and frame walls. These are available in various styles, allowing you to add a significant flourish across walls.

What are timber mouldings in Australia?

Australian timber mouldings are functional and decorative pieces of timber, MDF, or precision-engineered wood designed to deliver a refined, professional finish to interior spaces. Created to complement a wide spectrum of popular Australian interior design styles – from relaxed Hamptons and Coastal residences to Parisian-inspired elegance and sculptural Art Deco interiors – architectural timber mouldings are integral to a room’s proportion, character, and cohesion.

Ornamental timber mouldings define the transitions between surfaces, articulate ceiling heights, frame openings, and introduce layers of depth through light and shadow. Whether expressed as skirting boards that ground a space, architraves that frame a doorway with intent, cornice mouldings that crown a room, or wall panels and timber beading that add rhythm and resolution, each moulding profile contributes to the architectural narrative.

Insightful timber moulding guides

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right timber moulding profile?

Choosing the best moulding for your room relies on aligning with your design style and interior proportions. Consider your ceiling height, architectural features, and room function when specifying timber mouldings. Read our guide to choosing the right skirting and architraves for comprehensive design insights.

What is the difference between standard specification mouldings and decorative mouldings?

Standard specification mouldings are small, simple profiles used mainly for functional purposes, such as finishing the junction between walls, floors, ceilings, doors, or windows. They are commonly used in project builds that focus on practicality rather than contributing to the interior design style. Decorative mouldings are larger, more detailed profiles designed to add architectural character to a space, adding proportion, depth, and visual interest that helps to define and elevate the interior style.

Are Intrim timber mouldings eco-friendly?

Yes, all our FJ pine mouldings are made from sustainably sourced FSC-certified timber.

What lengths do Intrim mouldings come in?

Most of our mouldings are supplied in lengths of 5.4m, except for flexible polyurethane mouldings which come in lengths of 5.1m. Hardwood timber mouldings, such as American Oak, come in assorted lengths.

How much do timber mouldings in Australia cost?

Our timber mouldings are priced per lineal metre and sold in long lengths. The larger the quantity required, the lower the price per metre as the machine setup and handling costs are spread over the larger volume. Click the ‘buy now’ tab on any individual product page to access pricing on INTRADE - our online ordering system.

What material is good for external mouldings?

We recommend using polyurethane for external mouldings that are exposed to sunlight and the elements, including window and door surrounds. Polyurethane does not chip or split like timber and will look good for years with minimal maintenance. Primed FJ pine may be used for mouldings under eaves and ceilings that are not exposed to the elements and direct sunlight. You can paint either moulding style with external-grade paints, following the instructions from the paint manufacturer.

Who supplies architectural timber mouldings in Australia?

Intrim is the largest provider of timber mouldings in Australia, manufacturing and supplying premium decorative mouldings nationwide. Our specification teams travel throughout the country, providing product knowledge, samples, and guidance to help integrate mouldings seamlessly into interior design concepts.
