Get the Board & Batten Wall Panelling look

We love dressing up a plain wall with some simple board & batten detailing. It’s the perfect way to create dimension within a room and we love nothing more than creating one of our signature wall finishes using Intrim’s extensive range of products.

Firstly, it’s really important to get the spacing right so that the wall looks in proportion. A great way to figure this out is to measure the length of your wall and divide it by roughly 500mm, this will usually give you a nice amount of gap between the battens on a standard wall.

When planning your skirting choice with a battened wall, it’s important to consider the depth of your skirting to make sure that the battens don’t sit proudly, and that’s the great thing about Intrim, their in-house team is always super helpful in helping us figure out the right skirting depth to ensure we don’t run into such problems, here we used 135x30mm Custom SK366 as it had the extra height that we always love using, but more importantly, it the had that 30mm depth we needed for the batten to sit upon.

For the wall battens themselves, I instinctively lean towards a standardised 66mm x 12mm, here we used WB01/66 x 12mm FJ Pine. I always recommend a slightly thicker horizontal batten to finish off the wall as it frames it out quite nicely, here we used a 90 x 18mm DAR.

Here’s an overview of a few simple tips that we recommend when planning on doing your own board & batten wall:

• Make sure your skirting boards have adequate depth and a flat surface/lip to allow the battens to sit neatly on top ie. with no overhang, they should sit flush or just in on your skirting
• Order your battens and skirting pre-primed from Intrim to save your painters some time on site
• Allow for a thicker finishing piece on the top horizontal batten, this creates a nice detail/overhang and finishes off your wall beautifully. we always recommend using
  both nails and glue to secure the battens to the plasterboards
• Make sure you look for a non-yellowing water-based enamel if using white for your skirts and arches……you’ll thank us in the long run.

Gorgeous Detailing for Windows & Doors

Another FPP signature trait is always ensuring there is gorgeous detail to our window and door frames. For this particular project, we worked mostly with the existing windows to save on costs to the client. We were dealing with very yellowed enamel paint on the old window surrounds, so a great way to breathe new life into them was by sanding the frames back and dressing them up with some lovely architrave detail. Here we used SK392 architraves in 90x18mm and gave them a fresh coat of crisp white paint.

You will also notice that we used a skirting block around all of our door architraves. This was our first time using a skirting block and it certainly won’t be our last! What a lovely simple detail to just elevate your door frames that little bit more. Here we chose the SB05 skirting block for its simplistic style.

This little Burleigh Beach Shack has such a relaxed coastal charm about it, and it certainly is one of our favourite projects so far. We hope you love it as much as we do.
