Three Birds Renovations recently selected Intrim interior mouldings for their latest stunning renovation. Known as House 16, the jaw-droppingly beautiful project is the home of Erin Cayless, one of the Three Birds, and marks the tenth partnership with the group and Intrim.

Timber mouldings such as skirtings, architraves and battens help deliver a consistent design theme across the entire space of the home. Three Birds selected Intrim products to help carry their ‘urban farmhouse’ design vision throughout the house, giving it a seamless and cohesive charm.

Erin takes us on a sneak peek through House 16 to discover how small design details deliver a big impact. Along the way, we pick up some great advice that you can apply to your own home renovation.

Don’t Be Shy – Turn Skirting Boards and Blocks Into Features

Gone are the days when skirting boards and blocks took a design back seat. Three Birds encourages us to make the most of our timber moulding choices and see how they can enhance other features and even deliver a wow impact on their own.

“Skirting and architraves can really help elevate the style of your home whilst adding value and should not be forgotten about,” said Erin.

House 16 became a ‘first’ for Three Birds, who had never before used a skirting block to join the skirting and architrave. Erin was thrilled with the decision, which resulted in mouldings that work beautifully with the door as the block accentuates the framing and encases the door frame.

Design Tip:

Don’t let decorative mouldings be an afterthought. Take the time to find the right skirting board profiles to match the style of the home.

Focus on Architraves to Make Features Pop

The Three Birds team are great fans of choosing architraves rather than settling for the standard ones your builder chooses for you. They suggest you start by looking at beautiful images of rooms you love.

For Erin’s home, the team chose a smaller profile architrave as the window and door architrave, but the detail connects them perfectly.

Architraves not only highlight architectural and interior features in a home, but they also protect the doors, windows, and openings they encase.

Design Tip:

When choosing architraves, Erin says one thing to note is that they don’t always have to match the skirting.

Accentuate Ceiling Height With Wall and Ceiling Battens

The Three Birds team used timber battens on the walls and ceilings, dragging them from the wall all the way across the ceiling, highlighting just how tall they are.

A statement in itself, this ceiling/wall batten transforms a boring ceiling into a statement piece. The team also used ceiling battens in their stunning renovation of Three Birds Renovation House 15.

Wall battens are popular in heritage homes and work well in this Urban Farmhouse-inspired renovation.

Upstairs in Erin’s son Eddy’s bedroom, the team used a slightly different profile from the Casa Trim range to add that bit of interest in that room, taking it from boring to really amazing!

Design Tip:

Highlight ceiling height using wall and ceiling battens that run from floor to floor and across the ceiling, creating a continuous line.
