Installing Shadowline SK800 System Guides

How to Install Shadowline SK800

Intrim Shadowline SK800 is an integrated skirting system designed to create a clean, flush finish without the separate angle, noggin or multi-step process associated with traditional installation methods.

1 Assemble the door jamb

Cut the DJ800 door jamb material to required lengths. Make a 45-degree mitre cut at the top of each stile and at both ends of the head. Assemble the mitre joints between the head and stiles using PVA glue and nails or screws. (Detail A)

2 Install the door jamb and fix the skirting

Pack the opening and install the DJ800 door jamb plumb and level. Take care when installing jamb material, to make sure it is fixed parallel with timber framework.

Calculate the required jamb width by allowing for:

  • The wall-frame width
  • Plasterboard on both sides
  • The finished plaster-set thickness on both sides

For example, a 90mm frame with 10mm plasterboard and approximately 3.5mm of plaster set on each side requires a total jamb width of 117mm. This leaves 13.5mm between the frame face and the jamb face on each side.

Once the DJ800 door jambs are installed, cut the SK800 skirting to fit neatly between the jambs and the internal and external corners. Use 45-degree mitre cuts at corners.

When joining skirting along a straight section of wall, use a splice joint positioned over the centre of a wall-frame stud. Do not use a butt joint.

Fix SK800 to:

  • Timber framing: using nails or screws
  • Steel framing: using screws only

Fix the skirting into every stud at a maximum of 600mm centres. Use:

  • At least two fixings per stud for skirting up to 90mm high
  • At least three fixings per stud for skirting from 135mm to 185mm high
  • At least four fixings per stud for skirting from 235mm to 285mm high

Include one fixing approximately 20mm from the base of the skirting and another through the centre of the ribbed section at the top.

Install 5mm packers between the bottom edge of the skirting and the floor to allow for subframe movement.

(Detail B)
(Refer to Figure 2)

3 Install the plasterboard

Install the plasterboard to the framing in accordance with the  plasterboard manufacturer’s specifications.

Cut and fit each sheet as close as possible to the door jamb and skirting edges. Where possible, position the factory-finished plasterboard edge against the top edge of the SK800 skirting.

4 Install the PVC stop bead

Install PLTB 630 30mm x 6mm tear off PVC stop beads around the door jambs. Install the required perforated metal angles at external wall corners. Cut corner intersections carefully to minimise the build-up of plaster-setting compound. (Detail C)

5 Set the skirting and plasterboard joint

Remove all dust from the ribbed section at the top of the skirting before applying plaster-setting compound.

Set the joint where the bottom edge of the plasterboard meets the SK800 skirting using FibaFuse or paper reinforcing tape. Using a tape outside the recommended tape types may void the product warranty.

Position the tape centrally over the joint. The bottom edge of the tape should finish approximately 5mm to 10mm from the bottom edge of the skirting’s ribbed section.

Install all plaster-setting products and accessories in accordance with the relevant manufacturer’s specifications and instructions. We recommend using USG Boral and CSR plaster products only.

Installation tip: Allow every coat of jointing compound to dry fully before applying the next coat. Drying generally takes approximately 24 hours in normal conditions or 48 hours in cool conditions. Insufficient drying can contribute to cracking at the plasterboard and skirting junction. See USG Boral instructions here.

6 Set the door jamb and stop bead joints

Apply plaster-setting compound to the PVC stop beads around the door jambs. Install and finish all plaster-setting products in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications and instructions.

7 Finish ti

Apply all required coats of plaster-setting compound, including the finishing coats, and sand the joints smooth.

Once the compound has dried, tear off the exposed PVC lip from the stop bead around each door jamb. The surface is now ready for painting. All plaster set and accessories must be installed to manufacturer’s specifications and instructions.

How to Install Fire Rated Shadowline SK800FR

The SK800FR installation must comply with the system configuration and conditions set out in the relevant CSIRO assessment and Intrim installation instructions.

The assessed system uses steel wall framing, fire-grade plasterboard, FR MDF SK800 skirting and specified Rockwool insulation installed behind the skirting. The SK800FR profile has been tested to AS 1530.4-2014 and can achieve an FRL of -/60/60 when installed as specified.

Download the Shadowline SK800FR Installation Instructions and confirm all project-specific requirements before installation.

IMPORTANT: The standard SK800 instructions must not be used as a substitute for the SK800FR installation specification.

The configuration of the components for this system must be as follows.

Plasterboard lined wall system incorporating 64mm steel stud wall framing, lined on both sides with 16mm thick CSR Fyrchek plasterboard (or another brand with same fire rating standards), and the 18mm thick SK800 Shadowline FR MDF skirting board, screw fixed along the bottom of the steel framing, on both sides of the wall frame.

The bottom of the wall frame cavity must be lined with 50mm thick x 60kg/m3 Bradford Fibretex 350 Rockwool insulation board, continuously behind the skirting board and between the steel studs and must have a minimum distance of 160mm between the top edge of SK800 skirting and the top of the insulation board. (Refer to figure 1 below).

1 Installing the skirting

Cut SK800 to required lengths to fit neatly between door jambs and internal and external corners of framework. Cut SK800 skirting with 45-degree mitre cuts for internal and external corners.
FR MDF SK800 must be screw fixed to steel frame into every stud at a maximum distance of 600mm centres. (Minimum of 2 fixings per stud up to 90mm wide, minimum of 3 fixings per stud for 135 to 185mm wide and minimum of 4 fixings per stud for 235 to 285mm wide). These fixing points must include 1 fixing 20mm from base of skirting board and another fixing must be through the centre of ribbed section at top of skirting board. Install with 5mm packers between the bottom edge of skirting and floor to allow for any subframe movement. Apply a bead of Bindex Fire & Acoustic Sealant between base of skirting and floor substrate.

2 Rockwool insulation installation

Using 50mm CSR Fibretex 350 Rockwool. Cut and fix in between framing studs and rear faces of skirting boards allowing a maximum distance between the face of the insulation and the rear face of skirting of 14mm.
The height of the insulation must be 160mm minimum above top edge of skirting.

3 Plasterboard Installation

Using 16mm Fire Grade Plasterboard, Install plasterboard sheet to framework as per manufacturers specifications. Cut and fit plasterboard sheet as close as possible to door jamb and skirting edges. Preferable to have the factory finish plasterboard edge sitting on the top of SK800 skirting edge.

4 Setting skirting and plasterboard joint

Brush down the top ribbed section of the skirting to remove all dust prior to plaster setting. Set all plaster joints including the joint where the bottom edge of wall plasterboard sits on top of the Shadowline skirting, using paper joint tape or FibaFuse tape. (Any tape used that does not meet the recommended tape types will void all warranty).
The tape should be positioned within the joint, so the bottom edge of the tape comes within 5-10mm of the bottom edge of the ribbed section of skirting. All plaster set and accessories must be installed to manufactures specifications and instructions.

5 Finishing

Apply all coats of plaster set including top coats to all plaster joints and sand. All plaster set and accessories must be installed to manufacturers specifications and instructions.
TIP: to avoid the join between the skirting and plasterboard from cracking you must allow the jointing compound the dry fully between coats as per the manufacturer’s specifications and instructions. Drying times are approximately 24 hours in normal conditions or 48 hours in cool conditions between each coat.

Proposed Variations

The proposed construction shall be a steel plasterboard-lined wall that includes an Intrim Mouldings FR MDF skirting board backed with 50mm CSR Fibretex 350 Rockwool insulation as tested in FSP 1997 and subject to the following variations.

  • The wall linings may vary to include other proprietary brands of 16mm Fire grade plasterboard provided they have been tested or assessed to be fixed to each side of a 64mm steel stud without cavity insulation and achieve an FRL of at least -/60/60.
  • The wall may increase in height.
  • If the wall increases in thickness the maximum difference between the insulation thickness and the cavity size shall be tested at 14mm.
  • Refer to Figure 1 for a summary of the construction.

Flooring installation with Shadowline SK800

Shadowline skirting is normally installed before the plasterboard. When the project includes timber or tiled flooring, there are two sequencing options:

Recommended method: Install the flooring first, protect it with suitable floor protection, and then install the Shadowline skirting and plasterboard. This supports accurate set-out and a clean finished junction.

Alternative method: Install the Shadowline skirting first and leave the correctly calculated space below it so the flooring can be installed later. This approach requires careful allowance for flooring thickness, expansion requirements and the finished shadowline position.

The installation sequence should be confirmed with the builder, flooring installer and relevant product manufacturers before work begins.

Frequently asked questions

What is Intrim Shadowline?

Intrim Shadowline is a patented skirting and door jamb system with a 10mm shadow gap moulded directly into the profile. The skirting finishes flush with the plasterboard, creating a clean recessed detail at the base of the wall.

How thick is Shadowline skirting?

  • 12mm thick for use with 10mm plasterboard
  • 15mm thick for use with 13mm plasterboard
  • 18mm thick for the fire-rated Shadowline system

How does the SK800 compare with traditional P50?

P50 creates the shadow gap on site using separate components and additional setting work. With SK800, the shadow gap is factory-machined into the timber profile, removing the need for a separate metal angle, backing block and multistep build-up. Internal installation testing recorded an average installation time of 1 minute 49 seconds per metre for SK800, compared with 8 minutes 37 seconds per metre for P50. Based on these results, SK800 installs over 4.5 times faster than P50. Actual project results may vary according to site conditions, project complexity and installer experience.

What materials and sizes do Shadowline come in?

Unlike all our other skirting profiles, Shadowline skirting boards are exposed to the inside of the wall cavity. Because of this we ONLY sell our Shadowline skirting in primed MDF.

Can Shadowline be installed after a wall has been plastered?

No. SK800 is designed to be fixed to the wall framing before the plasterboard is installed. For an existing plastered wall, consider a face-fix skirting profile with a shadowline-style detail, such as SK342.

Is SK800 suitable for carpet, timber and tiled floors?

Yes. SK800 can be used with carpet, timber flooring, and tiles when the installation sequence and required floor clearances are planned correctly. For timber or tiled floors, Intrim recommends installing and protecting the finished floor first, followed by the Shadowline skirting and plasterboard. Alternatively, the skirting can be positioned to allow the flooring to be installed later, provided the installer allows accurately for flooring thickness and expansion requirements.

When is Shadowline installed?

Shadowline skirting and door jambs are installed against the framing before the plasterboard. The plasterboard is then fitted to the profiles, and the joints are finished with setting compound and approved reinforcing tape.

How do I select the correct Shadowline skirting height?

Shadowline skirting sizes are shown by their visible height, measured from the floor to the top of the shadow gap. The concealed section extends behind the plasterboard. Refer to the Shadowline table of dimensions to select the profile that suits the plasterboard thickness and required finishing height.

Is a fire-rated Shadowline profile available?

Yes. SK800FR is an FR MDF Shadowline profile tested by CSIRO to AS 1530.4-2014. It can achieve an FRL of -/60/60 when installed as part of the specified wall system and in accordance with the assessment conditions.

Is a separate Shadowline architrave required?

No. The DJ800 Shadowline door jamb coordinates with SK800 and acts as both the door jamb and the flush-finish detail around the opening.

Will the joint between the skirting and plasterboard be visible?

When correctly installed and finished, the junction between the plasterboard and skirting should not be visible. Use the recommended reinforcing tape and allow the jointing compound to dry fully between coats to reduce the risk of cracking.

How do I order Shadowline for my project?

Order Shadowline through INTRADE, Intrim’s online ordering portal. Before confirming your order, refer to the Shadowline table of dimensions and check that you have selected the correct profile, plasterboard thickness and visible skirting height. Please choose carefully, as refunds are not available once an order has been placed. If you are unsure which profile to select, contact Intrim before ordering.

Installation Tips

Tip 1

Use FibaFuse or paper joint tape at the skirting and plasterboard junction. Do not use fibreglass mesh tape.

Tip 2

For timber and tiled flooring, determine the finished floor level and installation sequence before fixing the skirting. The recommended method is to install and protect the finished flooring before fitting the Shadowline skirting and plasterboard.

Tip 3

Use nails or screws for timber studs and screws only for steel studs. Fix into every stud at no more than 600mm centres.
