A Reimagined Heritage Gem

CM Studio carried out a comprehensive redesign of this classic Sydney workers cottage in Paddington, transforming it into a tranquil, sophisticated inner-city residence. With a minimalist palette and refined detailing, the project is a masterclass in balancing contemporary design with heritage charm.

Originally converted into four apartments during the 1920s, the new homeowner sought to restore the three-level terrace to its original grandeur. The result is a seamless integration of old and new, where natural light, timeless materials, and thoughtful craftsmanship define every space.

Restoring History, Reimagining the Future

The redesign included a new lower ground floor addition at the rear of the home, where a once a dark and damp laundry once stood, turning the space into a sunlit kitchen and dining area that opens to the garden. The top level was reconfigured and restored, while the street-level salon and living room blends materials and detailing drawn from both the historic and contemporary elements of the home.

Elegance with a Contemporary Edge

Throughout the residence, a restrained palette of oak, steel, marble, and brass creates a sense of luxury. The central staircase that connects all three levels of the home features a refined oak balustrade that provides a nod to traditional timberwork while maintaining its contemporary edge. This combination of detail and restraint gives the home its unique identity—elegant, timeless, and serene, with curated glimpses into its layered history.

Timeless Details with Intrim Mouldings

To complement the home’s heritage character, CM Studio specified Intrim’s SK60 skirting and architrave profile—a decorative, traditional moulding that enhances the restored elegance of the space. Innovatively, the team also paired Intrim’s CR12 and CR19 chair rails to create classic wainscoting with a unique twist, adding depth and visual interest to key rooms.
