How to Install Intrim Lining Boards

Everything you need to know about installing Intrim's range of lining boards.

Tools

  • Pencil
  • Measuring Tape
  • Hammer/Nail gun or screw gun
  • Caulking cartridge gun or spatula
  • Adhesive (Intrim Intense Grip Adhesive)
  • Safety glasses
  • Nails, screws
  • Spirit Level/Laser level
  • Stud Finder

Preparation & Acclimatisation

Storage

  • Store boards in a covered, dry area, off the ground, away from sunlight and weather.
  • Stack on timber gluts spaced 450mm apart, at least 150mm above ground.
  • Cover loosely with plastic for airflow and rain protection.
  • Carry boards on edge to avoid damage.

Acclimatisation

  • Acclimatise boards on-site for 1–2 weeks (longer in extreme climates).
  • Use a moisture meter to confirm boards have reached equilibrium with local conditions.
  • Apply a preliminary finish to all surfaces before installation, especially for exterior use.

Installation Steps

1 Check & Prepare
  • Confirm moisture content is within the optimal range.
  • Check framing for straightness and compliance with AS1684.2 or AS4100.
  • Apply vapour-permeable membranes near the building envelope.
2 Fixing Boards
  • Boards can be installed horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
  • Fasten at recommended centres (see table below).
  • Apply a bead of construction adhesive to each batten or stud.
  • Position the first board with the tongue facing the installation area and secure with brads or nails.
  • Install subsequent boards, checking for straightness and plumb. Boards should fit snugly but not too tight.
  • Stagger butt joints over battens or studs.
  • Trim the final board to fit if needed, resealing any exposed timber before installation.
3 Fixing Methods

Face Fix: Two brads/nails at each stud, at least 15mm from edges/ends.

Secret Fix: One brad/nail through the tongue at each stud, head punched below the surface.

4 Expansion Gaps & Control Joints
  • Leave a 10mm expansion gap at the top/bottom (horizontal) or sides (vertical).
  • For large areas, install control joints every 3m, concealed under a cover strip if desired.

  • Use stainless steel fasteners for coastal areas, hot-dip galvanised for inland exteriors, and bright steel for dry interiors.
  • Avoid over-driving nails with pneumatic guns (120psi is usually sufficient).

Finishing & Maintenance

Finishing

  • Fill nail holes with wood filler and sand smooth.
  • Sand and spot-prime as needed.
  • Clean boards before applying topcoats.
  • Use light-coloured paints (LRV 45+) for exterior applications to prevent resin bleed.
  • Avoid film-forming polyurethane on tongue & groove joints to prevent bonding and cracking.

Maintenance

  • Clean exterior boards every 6–12 months with mild detergent and a soft brush.
  • Inspect and maintain sealants, flashings, and fixings.
  • Avoid pressure washing.
  • Reapply finishes as needed per manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Dispose of offcuts and waste per local authority guidelines; do not burn treated timber.
