Federation Charm with Intrim Mouldings

Intrimโ€™s timber mouldings elevate the interiors of this beautiful Southern Highlands home with two styles of wainscoting, detailed skirting boards, decorative architraves, and more.

Retford Park Highlands Home

Nestled in the heart of the Southern Highlands, this Federation/Victorian-inspired home in Retford Park Estate is a stunning example of how thoughtful design and architectural detailing can transform a new build into a timeless classic. Built by Waratah Building, this five-bedroom home channels the charm of a historic Highlands cottage while embracing modern construction.

To achieve the desired sense of established heritage, Intrim Mouldings were used extensively throughout the home โ€” from intricate skirting boards and architraves to striking wainscoting and window sill detailing.

A Bold Blend of Old-World Charm and Modern Elegance

This home doesnโ€™t shy away from being bold. It balances traditional architectural elements with thoughtful colour choices and textures. Two distinct wainscoting styles are used to create visual interest and flow across the rooms:

Raised Panel Wainscoting

Featured in the entryway, kitchen, dining and hallway, this classic wainscoting style is crafted using CR99 chair rail and IN09 inlay mould, and adds a refined, formal touch to these high-traffic areas.

Board and Batten Wainscoting

A dramatic feature in the bathroom, this wainscoting was painted in a deep royal blue and paired with exotic wallpaper and a clawfoot bathtub to evoke a luxurious, heritage-inspired retreat. The board and batten wainscoting was created using CR99 chair rail and WB01 wall battens.

Timber Profiles That Add Detail and Dimension

To complement the homeโ€™s Federation aesthetic, SK945B skirting boards and architraves were chosen for their ornate profile and decorative detail. These were paired with SB01 skirting blocks, enhancing the transitions between walls and flooring while adding a handcrafted feel to the space.

Window surrounds are completed with SN23 sill nosing, adding a traditional finishing detail thatโ€™s true to historical Australian homes.

Even in unexpected places like the bathroom or brick feature walls, skirting was used to add depth, dimension and polish. (And yes โ€” we have a handy guide on how to install skirting to brick walls if youโ€™re inspired to do the same.)
