Installing Connecta Rail Handrail

Step-by-step visual guide for installation of Connecta Rail Handrail System

1a Measure - Height of handrail above finished floor

Determine height of handrail above finished floor using the local building code requirements, see Australian standards handrail heights guide here. Subtract 55mm for 40mm diametre and 65mm for 50mm diametre from the handrail height to mark the height of top of stainless steel wall plate. Use a chalk line or use laser level to mark height.

1b Measure - Match lengths of handrail to sections of wall.

Handrail will be supplied in random lengths as standard. Match lengths of handrail to sections of wall to minimise wastage.

1c Measure - Length of walls
  • Start installation of handrail on longest walls. You may need to join multiple lengths of handrail together with a joiner SS40J/SS50J or 45 degrees mitre cut to achieve the required length of handrail for that section of wall.
  • Timber rail to start 120mm from door frame or end of wall which allows enough room for the return to be attached to the end of the timber rail
2a Cut to lengths
  • Apply masking tape to avoid timber tipping and splintering during cutting.
  • Cut lengths of timber handrail using a 80-100 tooth saw blade or equivalent. Use equipment that will ensure all cuts are square.
2b Sand the cut edges

Sand cut edges of timber handrail slightly applying a small bevel to remove any splintering from cutting.

3a Secure timber rail on flat surface

Place the timber handrail on a flat surface and secure to prevent rotation. Ensure any variations in timber rail are placed to underside of handrail.

3b Mark out the centres of handrail brackets

Handrail Brackets are to be spaced at a maximum of 900mm centres for 40mm diametre and a maximum of 1200mm centres for 50mm diametre. Wall mounting brackets to start no more than 150mm from end of the timber handrail.

3c Drill 15mm holes in the handrail

Using the second U shaped drilling jig provided, drill 15mm diameter holes in timber handrail to full depth of thread plus 2mm deep for clearance.

3d Remove drilling jig and make 16mm hole

Remove U shaped drilling jig and drill a 16mm hole in the top 5mm of the 15mm diameter hole to allow for the body of the handrail bracket

3e Insert bracket into the hole
  • Insert threaded upright of handrail bracket into hole turning bracket in a clockwise direction to wind into underside of handrail.
  • Ensure all brackets finish rotation in the same position ready for fixing to wall.
4a Drill hole to the centre of the end

Use Connecta Rail drilling jig to drill hole to the centre of the end of the timber handrail.

4b Insert the joining fastener

Insert JF01 joining fastener to the hole in end of handrail with hex key turning in a clockwise direction until tapered piece is left protruding from end of handrail.

5a Align assembled handrail to height mark on wall

Use assembled handrail as a template to drill clearance holes in wall for mounting by aligning upper edge of handrail bracket with height mark on wall.

5b Attach handrail brackets to wall

Use appropriate fixings to attach handrail brackets to the wall.

6a Prepare to attach stainless steel joining pieces
  • Apply masking tape to end of handrail to protect ends of timber handrail from adhesive during assembly.
  • Apply a small amount of Premium Construction Adhesive to end of handrail.
6b Attach bends or end caps
  • Locate hole in 90o bend/return, 45o bend/return or end cap over end of joining fastener in timber handrail.
  • Rotate bend or end cap until parallel and properly orientated. Insert allen key provided into hole in underside of stainless steel accessory and tighten. Over tightening may cause damage to thread in stainless steel accessory.
6c Wipe off excess glue

Wipe off excess glue with a clean rag and appropriate cleaning chemical
